What to Expect When You First Arrive for Spanish Studies Abroad at Costa Rican Language Academy

For many students, a stay with Costa Rican Language Academy (CRLA) is the most exciting adventure they’ve ever been on, especially if they’ve never been outside their own country.  Joining the CRLA Spanish language immersion programs is an incredible opportunity which will provide lifelong memories…  but it can be a bit overwhelming when you don’t know what to expect.

However, have no fear!  We have been helping students with Spanish studies abroad since the 1980s, and more than 15,000 people have completed Spanish courses with us.  We have plenty of experience in making your experience the best it can possibly be, with as little stress as possible.

Your First Day(s) With the Costa Rican Language Academy

First, don’t worry about travel or hotel arrangements.  All you have to do is get here!  We’ll pick you up from the airport no matter when your plane arrives, even if it’s the middle of the night.  If you have chosen a homestay option, you’ll be taken directly to meet your new host family which we arranged according to your preferences.

Depending on when you arrive, you probably won’t have any classes to worry about until the next day – or possibly a couple days later. You’ll have the rest of that time to relax, get over your jet lag, and get used to your new environment.

The first day of class will begin at 8:00 AM.  Not every day starts at this time, but it’s important to be on time for the first day for your oral evaluations.  If you’re staying with a host family, they’ll take you to school and ensure you’re familiar with the bus route and bus system in Costa Rica. (All homes are within walking distance or only a short bus ride away.)

It’s vital you are placed with teachers appropriate for your level of Spanish knowledge, so we conduct an oral test with each student to determine their level of proficiency.  After that, you’ll get to meet your teacher and other new students, as well as doing some general paperwork like getting your student card and pay for your course.

Then you’ll be taken to your class, receive an orientation in the afternoon and you’ll be ready for your adventure in Spanish studies abroad!   It really is that easy.  We want to make the process simple and painless, but contact us if you have any other questions. We will gladly help you!
